Margaret River outings

On the way to our lodging we stopped at Haystack winery to look at an art show of an artist Elizabeth O'Brien. Lovely soft pastels capturing the light of the Australian landscape. The cafe was closed but they were happy to have us wander around. At 10: 30 in the morning it was a bit early to start tasting. The gardens were varied and sweet smelling. There was a beautiful view down to the grape vines.

Perhaps this is the motto to travel by.

We next went a furniture gallery with all sorts of high end furniture and wooden kitchen items. Most of the woods used are Australian such as jarra. I wavered about a bowl made from a jarra Burl and a cutting board but trying pack such heavy items kept me from actual purchase. Besides Michael had fallen for one of the pastels at Haystack.

The above were the resisted items, below was the purchased pastel.

Mailing the print was an event unto itself. Andrew and I went to a cardboard rubbish bin and crafted a case which then had to be dismantled for size and weight restrictions. The picture is going by sea mail and is expected by the new year. Given the amateurish wrap job, I am hoping that we will eventually appreciate our Australian souvenir.
Next we had to try out Gabriel choclatiers. They have been open a week and a half. They import the actual beans and do the roasting as opposed to getting the chocolate liquor. All kinds of beans, from Ghana, Ethiopia, and South America to name a few. Of course hot chocolate is a must.

Now with our eyes spinning like tops we were animated to shop for dinner. Venison salami and perciutto and emu ham were gotten as was a triple creme cheese called OMG and fresh olives. We met friends of Andrew and Pauline at Duckstein Brewery/Saracen winery for lunch. housed in a contemporary building, we sat on a deck overlooking a lake and grape vines.

Then it was onto the road to see Yallingnap a lovely beach and point known for it's surfing waves, quite quiescent when we were there. The best spot, of course, the washing machine. The beaches here are pristine and empty by our standards. It is early in the season but there was one surfer on this day

One can walk along the coast for 40 km....

As you can see our rainy day never materialized. We returned to our cabin and cooked up a feast.
